If you are interested in Japan and studying Japanese you might be interested in the Learn Japanese Pod Magazine. It initially started out as a newsletter for Learn Japanese Pod, a Japanese learning website. It eventually turned into a mini magazine with information on traveling to Japan, studying Japanese and anything else related to that I thought would be interesting to include.
I’ve just completed and uploaded the latest Learn Japanese Pod Magazine for January and February. This issue includes:
- An interview with Matt Dunn of Morino Lodge on his life in Japan and snowboarding in Hakuba
- An article by Philip Kendal, A.K.A Sheepeater on the often confusing foreign loan words in Japanese known as gairaigo.
- A Japanese lesson to make you look like a pro when getting seats at an izakaya in Japan.
- Info on our Japan travel ipad apps
- And more…
If you want to get your hands on this free PDF magazine, just sign up to the members’ area and download it from the site.
A huge thanks to Phil, Kelly and Matt for helping to make this magazine happen.

This month I am doing a few experiments in online marketing with my latest Learn Japanese Pod Magazine. The magazine is a free-ish* PDF download with information on traveling in Japan, studying Japanese and more for those Japanophiles and language learners.
This month includes an article on autumn leaves written by Wes Lang of Hiking in Japan fame. There is also a great interview with “Sacchi” who embarked on a culinary cycling tour of Japan starting in Okinawa and ending in Hokkaido.
The magazine is free-ish* as I am trying out a new-ish system where you can get access to the download by paying with a tweet or mentioning it on Facebook. Run by paywithatweet.com, the idea is to use a social payment system to generate a buzz online.
I can see a few possible outcomes as a result of this experiment.
1) People completely ignore it.
2) It spreads across the internet like a Rebecca Black parody video becoming an instant sensation
3) It annoys the hell out of people
4) Or not
5) A mixture of the above
It will be interesting to see what happens and I’ll be posting the results later this month.
So if you would like to check out the news letter please:

Alternatively, you can become a member of learn Japanese Pod and get the newsletter plus other content on the site.

Stay tuned to see what happens…

I’ve just released my latest iPad app which is a set of photographs with maps and information on Osaka. You can also check out my other app on Kyoto here. You can get my Osaka iPad app here.

For those of you interested in photography, Japanese and sightseeing in Japan, I’m excited to announce that my new Kyoto iPad app is in the iTunes store now. It’s a photo essay of Kyoto, its temples and people and includes descriptions of the locations with maps.
I teamed up with Glob design who did the backend programming and have some other great apps.
The locations I chose to shoot were from a list of my personal favorite locations, temples and shrines in Kyoto. These include Ninna-ji, Ryoan-ji, Kinkaku-ji, Ginkakuji and Higashiyama-ku to name just a few. Check out the app for more locations.
The order of the photos follows the route I took doing the shoot which means this could also be used as a guide to sightseeing in Kyoto.
The beauty of this app is that I will be able to update it with new photos on future trips to Kyoto. This means I can continue to improve the quality of photos and increase the coverage of locations in the app.
I am now working with Glob design to create new photo essay apps for Nara, Kobe and Osaka. So please watch this space for more information.
