The other day I pretended to be a hipster and visited the Diesel Art Gallery in Aoyama to see Natsuki Otake’s exhibition. The exhibition runs until April 11th and includes colorful batik print designs and installations. It’s definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.

Date: February 10th – April 11th, 2010
Open: 13:00-20:00
Place: DIESEL DENIM GALLERY AOYAMA 2F
Address: 6-3-3 Minami Aoyama, Minato-ku, Tokyo
Tel: +81-3-6418-5323

I made a video of the exhibition and managed to talk to Natsuki about her work. Here is the video I made for Tokyo Weekender.

What: Hanging out at 4nchor5 la6 a Hacker Space and checking out what kinds of projects they are doing

Where: 4nchor5 la6 in Aoyama, Tokyo

Why: To check out a Hacker Space as an inspiration to making a new one here in Tokyo

Yesterday, (19th may 2009) Mitch Altman, Karamoon, B chan and myself went to check out 4nchor5 la6 located behind Aoyama Gakuin in Aoyama Tokyo. The trip was inspired from the desire to create a new Hacker Space here in Tokyo, a suggestion made at Tokyo Barcamp held on 16th May 2009 at Sun Mircosystems in Yoga Tokyo.

On their site, 4nchor5 la6 site, they describe themselves this way:

"The ‘4nchor5Lab’ is the open research and production space established in the joint investment from DGN and Rhizomatiks. Having Daito Manabe and Motoi Ishibashi as its main members, joined by Kanta Horio and Tomoaki Yanagisawa, the idea of this space is to gather artists and designers to create and share new ideas together. The 4nchor5 la6 not only works for clients, but also carries out its own projects"

We had an awesome time chatting to the members and checked out some of the projects they are working on. Here are a few videos of what they have done so far:

4nhchor5 la6 is run by Daito Manabe and friends and you can find out more info from their website here. It was very inspiring stuff and I for one want to get involved with making a space where techies, artists and whoever can get together, pool resources, collaborate and create. So far a URL and site have been created at http://tokyohackerspace.com/ I’m looking forward to seeing where this will go.
